| Palazzo Sasso was built during the 12th century as a palace for royalty. The hotel opened as a hotel in September, 1977 following a $20 million refurbishing. Many of the palace's original Medieval and Baroque features have been retained, and the hotel's furnishings are an eclectic mix of 18th- and 19th-century antiques and classic contemporary pieces. Richard Wagner wrote part of the Parsifal at the palace in 1880. Guests of Palazzo Sasso have included 1950s film celebrities Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergmann, singer Placido Domingo and American author Gore Vidal.
