About Us

Our Beginnings

Sanctuare was founded in 1973 as “Resorts Management, Inc.” by the former Executive Vice President of Rockresorts, Inc., the resort company founded by Laurance S. Rockefeller. Comprising the Rockresorts group were such acclaimed properties as Caneel Bay Plantation, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and The Woodstock Inn & Resort.

Sanctuare Today:

Sanctuare now represents 18 extraordinary vacation properties around the world – in the Caribbean, Costa Rica, Mexico, Italy, Bali, New Zealand, Florida and the Adirondacks. These properties are privately owned and are not part of any chain. Each has a distinctive personality, but they share the highest of service and facilities standards. Common to all are their locations in wonderfully private places, which means that guests enjoy an experience of remarkable quiet, natural beauty and serenity. Indeed, most of the properties are rented in their entirety to just one family or group at a time – the ultimate in privacy for special gatherings of family or friends.


Our Principal

President of the Company is John L. Steinle. Mr. Steinle began his career with Rockresorts after completing studies at Columbia University Graduate School of Business. He was manager for Rockresorts of Jenny Lake Lodge in the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming and later assumed the responsibilities for the management of Rockresorts’ marketing and sales. His almost twenty years with Rockresorts exposed him to all the functional areas of resort management and, as a consequence, he is knowledgeable in all the guest service aspects of a vacation experience. Mr. Steinle also spent ten years in the New York City advertising world, where he managed the advertising for Hilton International, IBM and Citibank. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Columbia University Business School.

How We Work with You

After we “meet”, which is typically on the phone, our first job is to understand all the factors that are key to the success of your vacation experience, factors such as:

Only after we understand your unique expectations and hopes from all these perspectives are we able to recommend a vacation spot that might fit. If our portfolio doesn’t include a “solution”, we will tell you that and try to facilitate a connection with an affiliate with whom we have worked in the past.

We will spend as much time as you wish in the decision-making stage. We have personally spent time at all of our properties and have enjoyed the properties’ amenities as well as their local attractions. At each, we have met with their owners and our recommendations to you will reflect the owners’ high rental standards as much as they will your needs. If you wish, we will try to arrange for you to speak directly with a previous guest of the property you are considering or, as is sometimes requested, with the property owner.

If you decide on one of our properties, that is just the beginning stage of our working with you. We will spend a substantial amount of time collecting information from you, in some detail, regarding the dietary and health conditions of your guests, the special needs of any children in your family, your menu and beverage preferences, activities preferences, arrival and departure details, special requests for entertainment or local excursions, etc. By the time you arrive at your vacation home, all the arrangements will be made to ensure the most relaxed, most personalized experience possible.

NOTE: Sanctuare’s customers, as often as they are high-end travelers, are those individuals’ travel agents. So, if you work with a travel agent, we welcome his or her inquiry, as do the properties we represent.
